HELIDON SANDSTONE
is now world famous for its superior quality sandstone.

The earliest known sandstone mine in the Helidon district began in the 1860's. By the 1880's Helidon sandstone was being supplied for use in the construction of public buildings and monuments in Brisbane and as far north as Cooktown in far north Queensland.

Today's sandstone industry directly and indirectly employs and supports hundreds of people providing income for hundreds of households through connected industry such as transport, landscaping, property development and building.

There is some controversy over the environmental impact this industry has on the Helidon Hills but many consider that through co-operative efforts on behalf of mining, conservation and government sectors, the sandstone industry will continue  to be a major contributor to the local and regional economy for many years to come and the ecological impact on the Helidon Hills can be managed successfully.
